An average of nine more customers visit convenience stores when the temperature goes up by one degree Celsius, a study has found.
Convenience store chain GS25 on Monday released the results of a survey of 1,500 convenience stores in Seoul and the metropolitan area. The study tracked the number of customers and sales per store per day, along with the average temperature, from January to June last year.
According to the study, when the average temperature was 4 degrees Celsius each store averaged 867 customers per day. But when the average temperature was 24 degrees, the number of customers reached 1,029.
For every one degree rise in temperature, the average number of customers at stores near offices increased by 21, while stores near subway stations showed an increase of 14 customers, and stores in residential areas had four more customers.
At 12 degrees Celsius, sales of ice cream products made of milk began to decrease as sales of ice pops began to go up. The sales of ice pops increased 30 percent for every one degree rise over 23 degrees.
Drink sales reached their peak when the average temperature was 16 degrees, while ice cream sales peaked at 23 degrees, beer peaked at 26 degrees, and insect repellents and moistened tissues peaked at 29 degrees.
