Exhibit to Show Unseen Photos from Korean War
|
A new exhibition will show previously unseen photographs of war-torn Korea taken by two British officers in 1953. Anthony Younger, an artillery officer, and Keith Glennie-Smith, a medical officer, took dozens of snapshots while serving in the Korean War. Sixty of their photos will be displayed to the public for the first time from May 18 to August 18 at the Seoul National University Museum in Seoul.

The soldiers arrived in Korea in December 15, 1952, when the Korean War was at its peak. Ten days later, on Christmas Day, they experienced their first taste of combat. Both officers photographed the devastation they saw until they returned to the U.K. after the armistice in 1953.

Most of the photos were taken in Seoul, but some show scenes of Yeoncheon, where their unit was stationed. The images document the heart-wrenching pain and misery that ordinary Koreans suffered during the strife. A tired mother in a crowded Dongdaemun market in Seoul nurses a baby and clutches a small wad of cash. War orphans toil in small eateries and laundries in return for accommodation -- the British soldiers from whom they picked up a few British-accented words of English called them all "Kim." A store in Miari Ridge in Seoul has a sign in English saying "Reasonable Prices, Best China Shop In Seoul" to attract foreign customers.
