Generals from the two Koreas on Friday signed a temporary agreement to guarantee safe passage for a trial run of cross-border railways. The agreement came in inter-Korean military talks. As a result, trains will be able to cross the Military Demarcation Line in the Demilitarized Zone for the first time in 56 years after railroads linking the two Koreas were cut off on June 12, 1951 during the Korean War. But the test runs will be conducted on a one-off basis.

South and North Korea burned the midnight oil negotiating two bones of contention. One was whether to sign a permanent agreement to guarantee safe passage of trains and cars shuttling between the two Koreas. The other was how to include the issue of redrawing the maritime border that would replace the existing Northern Limit Line in the West Sea in their joint press release, sources said. North Korea insisted on inclusion of the issue, proposing abolishing the existing maritime borders and creating new ones to prevent skirmishes.
