Factional leaders of the Uri Party, Uri Party defectors and the Democratic Party will launch negotiations to form a new party on Friday. A second massive exodus of Uri Party lawmakers could result. Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Nak-yon said representatives from each of the political groups will discuss setting up a new party in May.

They will discuss another potential wave of defections from the Uri Party lawmakers amid a head-on clash between President Roh Moo-hyun and former Uri Party chairmen Chung Dong-young and Kim Geun-tae.

Meanwhile, Uri chairman Chung Sye-kyun and other leaders held a contingency meeting to prevent another exodus on Thursday night. They decided to push for a coalition with other factions while persuading separatist lawmakers to remain in the party fold. The incumbent chairman rejected calls from Chung and Kim to dissolve the party, saying that he had not been given a mandate to decide on the disintegration of the party.
