Foreign-language high schools in Seoul will likely not require applicants to submit TOEFL test scores when admitting new students in 2009. Critics have blamed the recent TOEFL fiasco on the fact that even elementary students have been taking the English test in preparation for going to foreign-language high schools.
Vice principals from six foreign-language high schools in Seoul made the preliminary decision in a meeting at Ewha Girls' Foreign Language High School on Thursday afternoon. The educators discussed dropping requirements for all the current English tests, including TOEFL, TOEIC and TEPS.
Hanyoung Foreign Language High School Vice Principal Kim Jong-in said that the move is aimed at easing the TOEFL situation and lessening the burden on applicants to foreign-language high schools. The schools are mulling alternatives such as conducting their own independent English test.
An association of principals of 29 foreign-language high schools nationwide will announce the final decision on the matter after a meeting at Busan International Foreign Language High School on Friday.
