Was ¡®UCC¡¯ a Storm in a Teacup?
The sweeping popularity of user-created content (UCC) on the Internet will be fueled further by cell phones and MP3 players that are equipped to access the online clips, photos and music files. Until now most people could only enjoy UCC by connecting to the Internet with a computer, because few UCC websites were set up to download files to portable devices.

But now UCC is available on some cell phones and MP3 players. Reigncom, the maker the iRiver MP3 player, is working on a file downloading service in cooperation with UCC site Mncast. The two companies will launch the service to allow iRiver users to download free files from Mncast this month.

The iRiver Plus 3 program will automatically transform UCC files into ones suitable for portable devices. IRiver users will be able to enjoy video clips stored on the MP3 player anytime, anywhere, whether they are outside or on the move.

Reigncom plans to expand the service to other UCC providers like Aura. A Reigncom official said the company would keep increasing the supply of content because that's what portable devices are meant for.

Meanwhile, portable media player maker Cowon is working with UCC file market PixCow to allow its customers to download video clips for W500 (US$1=W932) per file. In order to prevent illegal sharing, the files are protected with digital rights management (DRM) software.

Cell phone users can also enjoy UCC on their handsets. On its music portal Dosirak, KTF is testing a digital music market that will let anyone upload music and video clips to enjoy on their phones. Users can also sell their content to other people if the files don¡¯t violate copyright laws.

SK Telecom provides a UCC service through its wireless Internet service Nate and June. Some 260,000 people use the UCC service every month. SK, Korea's largest telecom company, also launched a premium UCC service that provides a wide range of entertaining video clips.
