Hyundai's Veracruz Limited crossover SUV was the subject of effusive praise in an article in Sunday's Washington Post newspaper. According to the article "That's No Lexus, It's a Hyundai", the Veracruz surpassed the Lexus RX350 in performance, interior design and safety. "Hyundai Motor is not a tiny South Korean manufacturer of cheap little cars. It can topple General Motors. It can upset Toyota. The sixth-largest car company in the world is a threat to anyone making cars, economy or luxury," the article said.
The Veracruz performed favorably in a driving test against the RX350 in San Diego, and the writer pointed out that the Veracruz surpassed all luxury SUVs in terms of crash-avoidance and impact-mitigation equipment. Veracruz also has excellent standard equipment such seating for seven while the Lexus RX350 has space for just five, the article said.
The Veracruz also costs several thousand dollars less than the Lexus RX350, the article noted, and it uses regular unleaded fuel while Lexus RX350 requires premium unleaded.
"The problem for Hyundai remains consumer perception," the article concluded. Getting consumers to think of Hyundai as a luxury brand won't be easy, it said, and "fair or not, for the time being, 'Lexus' still sounds better than 'Hyundai.' "
