World's 3rd-Tallest Tower Planned for Seoul

Korean Towers Aimed to be among World's Tallest

The city of Seoul has approved a plan for a 620-m tower with some 140 to 155 stories to be built in the Yongsan area. When it's finished the building will be the third-highest in the world, following the Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (700-meters high when it's done in 2008) and the Tower of Russia (649-meters high when it's done in 2010).

The tallest building in the world is the Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan, which is 508 m high and has 101 floors. The tallest building in Korea is the Tower Palace in Gangnam-gu, Seoul at 261 m and 69 floors.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government said its urban development and construction committee approved the construction of the tower for the Yongsan area on Thursday. The project will total 400,000 sq.m, with about 55,000 sq.m allotted for residences. But the city said 150,000 sq.m of the proposed area must be reserved for future development. It also added a condition that Korea Railroad, the building's developer, must pay for the cost of improving the traffic network in the area.

An official from Korea Railroad said the city's conditions to exclude 150,000 sq.m of the land from the project would affect the company's business prospects, forcing it to draw up new development plans. Youn Hyeok-kyung, the director of the city's urban management division, explained that the city is not opposed to developing the reserved area, but rather wants development to happen in stages to avoid problems such as traffic congestion. Talks with Korea Railroad will continue, he added.
