Opinions were roughly evenly divided over the departure Monday of former Gyeonggi Province governor Sohn Hak-kyu from the Grand National Party, according to a poll. The survey of 731 people over 19 by Gallup Korea and the Chosun Ilbo saw 34.9 percent of respondents disapprove of Sohn¡¯s defection and 30.1 percent in favor. Some 35 percent were undecided.
But Sohn¡¯s approval rating as a presidential hopeful rose to 8.2 percent, from 5.9 percent in a similar Gallup poll two weeks ago, while the number of undecided voters fell from 19.3 percent to 16.7 percent. The other GNP presidential contenders, former Seoul mayor Lee Myung-bak and former GNP chairwoman Park Geun-hye remained unaffected by Sohn¡¯s departure, with approval ratings of 43.9 percent and 20.3 percent, virtually unchanged from a Gallup poll on March 3.
Some 2.4 percent of respondents supported former Uri Party chairman Chung Dong-young, 2.3 percent former justice minister Kang Keum-sil, and 1.2 percent former prime minister Han Myeong-sook. Health and Welfare Minister Rhyu Si-min won approval ratings of 1.1 percent, former ruling Uri Party chairman Kim Geun-tae 0.9 percent and former Seoul National University president Chung Un-chan 0.9 percent.
The confidence level was 95 percent with a margin of error of 3.6 percent.
