Foreign investors recorded an estimated W43 trillion (US$1=W945) in unrealized gains from the Korean stock market in 2006, more than four times the W9.5 trillion in unrealized gains Korean investors earned from overseas stock markets.
According to a Bank of Korea report on international investment in 2006, foreign investors saw US$35.3 billion in unrealized stock gains and $10.1 billion in bond investment gains last year.
Foreign investors recorded an average annual return rate of 12 percent last year thanks to the bullish KOSPI index and the strong won. The Korean Stock Exchange soared 4.0 percent on average, while the won appreciated 8.2 percent.
In bond investments, foreign investors earned huge gains from a variety of financial derivatives like interest rate swaps, forward exchange and options as well as from traditional bond investments, the Bank of Korea said.
