Korea University president Lee Pil-sang received an 88.7 percent approval in a two-day vote of confidence called after Lee was accused of plagiarizing his students' work.

The validity of the vote results, however, are in dispute as less than 40 percent of the 1,219 eligible faculty members voted Tuesday or Wednesday.

In addition, the Korea University Foundation, which has the authority to decide on plagiarism and dismissal cases, has also discounted the vote of confidence, so the controversy over President Lee is expected to continue.

Philosophy professor Ha Jong-ho who represents the professors¡¯ council said the vote results ¡°are not even worth mentioning. The correct interpretation is that two thirds of the professors either disapproved or withheld their approval. There was no majority approval.¡±

Despite the low turnout, President Lee seems to be moving to use the results as justification to suppress the controversy. A source close to Lee said, ¡°President Lee plans to disclose his position tomorrow. He will probably say that he will do his best to lead the university for the next four years based on the vote results.¡±

Several administrators are said to be considering resigning in objection to President Lee¡¯s position.
