Ewha Womans University has unveiled a plan to become one of the world¡¯s top 100 universities by 2010. University president Lee Bae-yong pledged to overhaul every department of the school to make it a global hub of education for women, equipping it with world-class study and research programs to bridge West and East.
Under a plan dubbed ¡°Global Ewha 2010 Project,¡± the university will establish branch campuses in the U.S., U.K. and China by 2010. Professors and students will be sent from Korea to the new campuses to carry out various academic, scholarship and internship programs. More branches will eventually be opened in Japan and India.
The school also plans to hire 50 more foreign professors this year to ensure all courses have more than one foreign professor. New Ewha students will be required to take four classes in English, with two under the tutelage of native-speaking professors.
Further, Ewha will open a new international college in the first semester of this year. The School of International Studies, established in 2001, will be integrated into the new college, which has been named after the university¡¯s founder Mary F. Scranton. All classes at the new college will be conducted in English by a faculty of renowned global scholars including Nobel Prize laureates.
As part of the new plan, the university will also provide a Korean language education program for foreign students. It will nurture Korean language teachers and establish the headquarters of a worldwide network of Korean language teachers.
