Korea and the U.S. have decided to deal with a new role for UN Command in maintaining the armistice once Seoul has full operational control of its troops. After the 11th Security Policy Initiative talks, the Defense Ministry on Thursday said the two sides agreed that UN Command, headed by the U.S. Forces Korea chief, could find it difficult to maintain the armistice once it no longer has control over Korean troops. But the two allies will discuss the issue in a separate venue and report the results of negotiations to the bilateral Security Consultative Meeting, in October. The decision comes after the U.S. told Korea late last year that it plans to transfer management of the armistice to Seoul. It remains to be seen if they can reach a conclusion on the hairy issue by October.
