U.S. to Wrap Up Probe of N.Korea Accounts Soon
The U.S. top nuclear envoy Christopher Hill on Monday said that U.S. Treasury officials want to end their 18-month-long probe into North Korean accounts frozen in the Macao-based Banco Delta Asia and recommended waiting what conclusion they will reach. Hill made the remarks in an interview with KBS, citing a phone conversation with Deputy Assistant Treasury Secretary Daniel Glaser prior to his visit to Seoul. As a condition to start discussions on the dismantlement of its nuclear program, North Korea has demanded that the U.S. unfreeze its accounts with the Macanese bank.

According to Hill, Glaser appeared to think that the recent meeting with North Korean delegates on the U.S.¡¯ financial sanctions in Beijing was useful. Turning to the next round of the six-way nuclear talks, which opens in Beijing on Thursday, Hill seemed wary of excessive optimism, saying that negotiators don¡¯t welcome high expectations.
