UN Changes Mission of Korean Troops in Lebanon
Korean troops to be dispatched to Lebanon will take on patrol and reconnaissance missions there, an official with the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Sunday. The UN initially asked Korean troops to guard a logistics base and supply routes in Tyre, southern Lebanon, but construction of the base has been delayed. The government decided to send some 350 mainly combat troops to the Middle Eastern country in April after the UN asked Korea to support a peacekeeping force there. The UN effort follows heavy Israeli incursions into southern Lebanon after members of the Palestinian group Hezbollah, which is based there, launched attacks on the Jewish state. The change of mission could delay the dispatch of Korean troops.
