U.S., North Korean Envoys Meet in Berlin
Top U.S. and North Korean negotiators met in Berlin to discuss how to reopen the six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear issue Tuesday, the U.S. State Department said. ¡°The purpose (was to talk about) ... how to set the ground work for the next round of six-party talks to ensure those would be productive,¡± State Department spokesman Tom Casey said. He did not elaborate on the details of the sudden meeting.

The lead U.S. negotiator, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, is in Berlin to deliver a speech at the American Academy Wednesday. After wrapping up his schedule there, the diplomat will fly Friday to South Korea, China and Japan to further discuss ways to persuade North Korea to scrap its nuclear program. It has not been revealed why North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan visited Berlin. Casey said that he was not aware if Hill would meet with North Korean officials during his Northeast Asia trip.
