A senior High Court judge is in hospital after a disgruntled litigant shot him with a crossbow on Monday. Seoul High Court Justice Park Hong-woo was shot in his left side with a crossbow by Kim Myung-ho, a former math professor in Sungkyunkwan University, at his residence in Jamsil, southern Seoul on Monday evening. Park received emergency treatment at a nearby hospital before being taken to Seoul National University Hospital.
Park sustained a 7-8 mm wide and 2 cm deep injury in his left side, some 18 cm from the navel, doctors said. But the arrow missed vital organs and he is not in critical condition. Park was waiting for the elevator on the first floor of his apartment building when he was attacked by Kim, who was hiding in a stairwell. The attacker called out and fired a crossbow. Kim was arrested on the scene after Park¡¯s driver and apartment guards called the police. He was taken to Songpa Police Station for questioning. Police believe the attack was planned since a kitchen knife and a piece of red string were found on the stairs where Kim was hiding.
The attacker was hired as a math professor at Sungkyunkwan University in 1991. But after being disciplined for slandering colleagues and being negligent of his duties, he was let go in 1996. Kim filed a suit against the school to get himself reinstated but lost at first instance. On Jan. 12 this year, Park apparently incurred Kim¡¯s wrath by dismissing his appeal. Kim argued the university sacked him after he took issue with what he claimed was a problem with the college entrance exam in 1995, but the court rejected his claim. The attacker told police he went to Park¡¯s house to ¡°straighten things out¡± as the judge in his opinion was helping cover up foul play in the university's entrance exam.
