Negroponte to Handle N.Korea Matters in State Dept.
John Negroponte, who has been nominated as deputy to the U.S. secretary of state, will take key responsibility for handling the North Korean nuclear crisis, the Washington Post said on Jan. 5. The newspaper said Negroponte will also play a key role in shaping the U.S.' Iraq policies, soon to be announced by President George W. Bush as well as China and North East Asia policies. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in charge of Iran and Israel-Palestine issues. Negroponte, a veteran diplomat, was responsible for Korean issues as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs and visited South Korea in August 2005 to meet President Roh Moo-hyun.
