A Spanish surgeon who examined Cuban President Fidel Castro says the Communist leader does not have cancer.

The Madrid-based surgeon, Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, told reporters in Havana Tuesday that Mr. Castro is recovering from a serious operation. He said no additional surgery is currently planned.

The 80-year-old Cuban leader underwent intestinal surgery for an unspecified illness in July. At the time of the July operation, Mr. Castro handed power to his brother, Raul, and has not appeared in public since.

Cuba's government says the health of the island's president is a state secret, fueling speculation about his condition. Cuban officials have repeatedly denied reports that President Castro has cancer.

The director of U.S. national intelligence, John Negroponte, recently said Mr. Castro is very ill and could die within months.
