Korean Shipbuilders Sweep Global Top Five Rankings

Korean shipbuilders hold the world's top five spots in order backlog. London-based shipbroker Clarkson said the world's biggest shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries retained the top spot last month, with an order backlog of 13.47 million compensated gross tons. Samsung Heavy Industries ranked second with 9.23 million CGTs, followed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering with 7.6 million CGTs. Order backlog refers to received orders that have begun processing. Two Chinese shipbuilders and one Japanese were also ranked among the global top 10. The Korea Shipbuilders Association said, however, that Korea's focus on high value-added ships like LNG carriers will make it tough for its Asian competitors to catch up.
