Many people are delaying the purchase of a new computer until Microsoft¡¯s new operating system Windows Vista is released in late January. Most PCs now available have Windows XP, the previous version of the OS, and few customers are willing to face the hassle, and expense of some W200,000 (US$1=W947), of upgrading their OS a couple of months after purchase. What¡¯s more. Windows Vista works best with a main memory of more than a 1 GB, far larger than memories for computers with Windows XP. The OS also needs an up-to-date processor, a hard disc with a large cache and a high-definition graphic card, so it cannot be installed on just any ¡°old¡± computer.
PC makers are scrambling to rescue some of their market from the lull. Samsung Electronics will send a Windows Vista program free of charge to customers who buy new desktops or laptops until March 15. To make sure they qualify, customers should check the promotion conditions and to register on the website for Samsung computer users (www.zaigen.co.kr) after purchase. LG Electronics will also offer a free Windows Vista upgrade for its 28 models until late this year. Purchasers must register their information on the homepage for LG computer users (www.lgepc.co.kr).
Microsoft Korea will give a discount to customers who buy new computers with a ¡°Windows Vista Capable¡± sticker until March next year. But while such promotions relieve headaches about expense, they still leave customers with the job of installing the new OS.
