The new UN committee under the Security Council charged with monitoring if states comply with their obligations to sanction North Korea is officially launched on Monday.
Heading the committee is Slovakia¡¯s Ambassador to the UN Peter Burian (47), and his deputies are the ambassadors from Qatar and Argentina. Following the personnel decisions, the first meeting of the group convenes on Monday. It is be attended by all 15 member nations of the Security Council, but the permanent members -- the U.S., U.K., France, China and Russia -- per convention, are taking no executive spots.
Beginning his diplomatic career in the Middle East division of the Czechoslovakian Foreign Ministry in 1983, Burian was dispatched to the Embassy in Washington and NATO. Burian is also in charge of the 1540 Committee formed under U.N. Resolution 1540 for checking the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The South Korean government plans to announce its sanctions on the North before Nov. 14. In accordance with article 11 of Resolution 1718, member countries must submit a report on their intended measures within 30 days of the date the resolution was adopted.
¡°Work will begin on a list of items for sanctioning and people who must be sanctioned with the help of experts at the UN Secretariat,¡± a government official said. ¡°The first meeting will be spent discussing the method of operation for the committee and its schedule.¡±
