The French couple living in the Seoul villa where two infants were found dead in the freezer in July are being held for questioning, French police said Tuesday. French police told reporters that a DNA test conducted by French authorities indicates a 99.99 percent probability that Jean-Louis Courjault and his wife Veronique are the children¡¯s parents.

A French prosecutor said the cause of the babies¡¯ death has yet to be identified since the investigation is in an early stage. The Courjaults turned themselves in to French police in August and underwent preliminary questioning as witnesses. But now they will be treated as suspects. Jean-Louis Courjault refused to answer questions from reporters. The pair have denied Korean police¡¯s finding that they are the parents of the infants based on a Korean DNA test.

An official at the Korean Embassy in France said the arrest of the couple will be formalized after they have been questioned by a judge for 48 hours. The crux is whether the pair put the already dead babies in the freezer or killed them, the official added. Under French law, murder carries a sentenced of up to 30 years in prison, or up to life imprisonment if the victim is under 15.

Korean police handed the DNA samples of the frozen infants over to French police on Sept. 28 as the French pair refused to return to Korea.
