The UN Security Council on Monday recommended Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon as the next UN secretary-general. The Security Council adopted the recommendation by acclamation without vote since Ban was the sole remaining candidate after the others withdrew.
Ban told reporters at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul that he would make efforts to resolve every problem threatening world peace, including the North Korean nuclear issue. He said he felt ¡°burdened¡± at a time for rejoicing due to North Korea¡¯s nuclear test on Monday.
The General Assembly could approve the recommendation as early as on Friday, and Ban will deliver an acceptance speech at the general meeting. The approval process will be broadcast live throughout the world.
North Korea¡¯s nuclear test is unlikely to affect Ban¡¯s appointment. A UN official said member countries unanimously support Ban as the next secretary-general despite the test. Immediately he is confirmed in the General Assembly, Ban will leave for New York and form a transition staff to take over the position. He is expected to resign as foreign minister around then. A government official said the government will take ¡°appropriate measures¡± to replace him soon.
