Korean Weightlifter Takes Second World Championship
Korean weightlifter Jang Mi-ran has become the first Korean to win gold in the World Weightlifting Championships two years in a row. In the women¡¯s super heavyweight (over 75 kg) division that opened in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Jang hoisted 179 kg in the clean and jerk and 314 kg overall, bringing home two gold medals. In last year¡¯s championships in November in Doha, Qatar, Jang also picked up top honors. In the snatch Jang lifted 135kg which, although only a hair¡¯s breadth from Chinese lifter Mu Shuangshuang¡¯s lift of 136kg, was not enough to wrest the gold from the Chinese.

In her first attempt at the snatch, Jang challenged herself to a 130 kg lift but failed and conceded gold in that category to the Chinese contender. But the 178kg that Mu Shuangshuang was able to lift the third round of the clean and jerk, was bested by the Korean with a 179kg lift in the final round, turning the tables. Overall that left the athletes with the same score, 314 kg, but due to the fact that the Chinese lifter tips the scales at 130.5 kg while Jang weighs 17 kg less, the Korean took her second medal of the day.

Korea¡¯s Jang Mi-ran, celebrates after lifting 179 kg in the third round of the clean and jerk in the women¡¯s super heavyweight division (over 75 kg) at the World Weightlifting Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Sunday.

¡°Since four or five days before the competition, I¡¯ve been suffering from tympanitis (inflammation of the middle ear), but because of the doping test, I haven¡¯t even been able to take any medication for it,¡± Jang said after the victory. ¡°I¡¯m happy that I achieved a result equal to the training I¡¯ve done, and I will definitely take the gold medal at the Doha Asian Games in December.¡± Coach Kim Hae-kwang, who has guided Jang since she first got into lifting, says, ¡°She is strong, but it was the agile shifting of her body and her flexibility that allowed her to overwhelm the other competitors.¡± Jang Mi-ran is the world record holder in the snatch (138 kg) and overall (318 kg).
