Internet users will no longer have to give their resident registration number when signing up for the online game ¡°Lineage¡± or the Naver portal after massive leakage of private information from such sites. The Ministry of Information and Communication and major online companies decided to come up with means to replace the current online registration system.

The ministry on Monday published new guidelines that allow Netizens to use five trusted credit agencies -- Korean Information Service, National Information & Credit Evaluation, Seoul Credit Rating & Information, Korea Information Certification Authority and Korean Electronic Certification Authority -- to have their identity confirmed instead of typing in their registration number when they want to sign up for a website.

Credit card information, cell phone number, bank account number and others can be used instead of even more sensitive information. Netizens will use an ID and password or 13-digit alternative registration number to become a member of the portal or online game site that they want. ¡°We came up with the guidelines by working together with online companies due to increasing negative public opinions about the leakage of resident registration numbers,¡± a ministry official said. ¡°When major websites set an example, smaller ones will follow suit.¡±
