Psychological problems are the no. 1 factor causing people to contemplate suicide, a straw poll by crisis counselors at Life Line of 526 men and women suggests. Of respondents in their 20s, the largest group or 27 percent said that they had contemplated suicide because of their psychological health, while 19 percent cited family problems, and 6 percent trouble at the workplace.

Of people in their 30s, 27 percent cited their own mental state, 15 percent problems at home, 11 percent problems with the opposite sex, and 10 percent economic reasons. As far as the specific psychological problems were concerned, the largest number not surprisingly suffered from depression. Those in their 20s said that not being able to get the job they want and other concerns about their future caused them to lose interest in life and gave birth to depression.

Many in their 30 reported business failures, lack of credit, a straying spouse or divorce as causes for depression. Some contributing factors to the rate of depression of people in their 20s and 30s are the heightened culture of competition, and the further isolation of the nuclear family. ¡°As competition grows fiercer, more people fail to adapt to the system and feel like giving up,¡± says Ha Sang-hun, director of Lifeline Seoul. ¡°The more isolated existence of the nuclear family these days offers fewer opportunities for people to confide their worries to their family, and so their world grows smaller.¡±
