Ban Finishes 1st in UN Straw Poll with No Objection
Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon has once again come in first in a straw poll of candidates looking to succeed Kofi Annan as UN secretary-general in the Security Council.

Sources said in the second straw poll on Thursday, Ban picked up more votes of encouragement than in the first round. Placement of candidates 1 to 3 was the same as last time, according to AFP. Ban was trailed by UN Undersecretary-Gnenral Shashi Tharoor of India, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai, Jordan¡¯s delegate to the UN Prince Zeid al-Hussein, and former UN disarmament chief Jayantha Dhanapala of Sri Lanka.

In the first poll on July 24, Ban won 12 ¡°encourage¡± votes, two abstensions and one ¡°discourage.¡± If Ban again has a clear advantage in the third polling on Sept. 28, his election is as good as in the bag.
