Samsung Electronics is launching a mobile phone that enables users to communicate in 90 countries including Korea, the U.S., Japan and Europe.
Samsung and SK Telecom said the World Phone or SCH-V920 will be launched on Wednesday. It works on Korea¡¯s CDMA, Europe¡¯s GSM and Japan¡¯s JCDMA networks, making it usable in 90 countries. This is the first mobile phone that offers international roaming services not only in North America, Central and South America and Asia, which use CDMA technology, but also in other parts of the world.
The pair say the phone will also enable users in GSM countries to transmit text messages and use caller ID services. SK Telecom is to hold a promotion where users in GSM countries can send text messages free of charge -- they usually cost W460 (US$1=W960) per message -- until late October. The slide-type phone has a host of features such as a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth technology, NATE Drive service, the high-tech wireless service for drivers, and MP3 player.
¡°Our new mobile phone, which combines cutting-edge performance with high-end design concepts, will be a channel for free and convenient communication anywhere around the world,¡± the president of Samsung's Telecommunications Network Business Lee Ki-tae said. SK Telecom president Kim Shin-bae said since travelers to Japan account for a whopping 20 percent of the total number of Koreans who go overseas, the introduction of the first phone here available for use in Japan is a significant step. The phone comes in grey, red, silver and white and costs between W500,000 and 600,000.
