Korea has finally lifted a ban on U.S. beef imports after an inspection of 36 meat processing facilities in the U.S. in May and September found no problems, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Friday. Seoul and Washington earlier agreed that Korea will resume imports of only boneless meat from cows 30 months old or younger, the age when they are less vulnerable to contracting BSE or mad cow disease.

U.S. beef is expected to hit Korean shelves around Oct. 6 considering the time required for processing and delivery in the U.S. and quarantine and customs procedures here. The government will not lift the ban on rib meat, tongue, internal organs, ribs, tailbones and processed meat. ˇ°If brain, spinal cord, cranial bone and backbone, which have a high chance of causing mad cow disease, are found in imported U.S. beef, the import ban will resume, a ministry official warned.
