New liquid crystal display TV models that are even cheaper than conventional cathode ray tube TVs are poised for release. Digital Device, a medium-sized digital TV manufacturer here, says it will hold a special promotion starting from Monday to sell 1,000 32-inch LCD TVs with digital receivers in the body for W777,000 (US$1=W964). Consumers can buy one at its offline shop at the Techno Mart in Seoul or via its online shopping mall (www.digitaldeviceshop.co.kr) on a first-com first-serve basis.
The price is even lower than that of high-definition 32-inch CRT TVs available now, which are priced at around W800,000, and more than 35 percent cheaper than the 32-inch LCD TVs offered by Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other large LCD TV manufacturers here, which cost more than W1.2 million (for the lowest price available online). Experts say small and medium-sized LCD TV makers have succeeded in narrowing the quality gap with their bigger counterparts.
