The disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk is to resume his research in a newly created 496 sq.m lab in Seoul. The Ministry of Science and Technology said Friday it gave the former Seoul National University professor approval to set up the Suam Biotechnology Institute Foundation.
¡°Members of Hwang¡¯s research team who took part in cloning dogs and cows have chosen to continue to work for the university, but most of the other members who worked in cloning pigs and human stem cells have opted to work with Hwang at the new foundation,¡± a ministry official said. Hwang¡¯s work will focus on pigs for organ transplants.
One team will try to produce genetically manipulated pigs whose organs do not cause immune rejection when transplanted into humans, while another will create porcine stem cells and test them for safety on the cell level before they are used for transplants. The team includes 15 graduate students and four research assistants who worked with Hwang before.
