The government will offer relief to North Korea via the South Korean Red Cross and humanitarian groups to help the impoverished country recover from last month¡¯s severe flood damage.

Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok met with the head of the South Korean Red Cross Han Wan-sang at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul on Thursday to discuss ways to help the North cope with flood damages and decided to offer rice and recovery equipment. The government has already decided to provide some W10 billion (US $1=W958) to the North via humanitarian groups. An official with the ministry said the money will come from the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund.

The exact size of aid to be sent via the Red Cross is not known, but Han said after his meeting with the minister it ¡°won¡¯t just be symbolic,¡± indicating the amount will be substantial. In the past, tens of thousands of tons of rice worth around W10 billion and building equipment have been provided.
