More and more female celebrities find themselves assaulted by speculation about the authenticity of their breasts. The singer Byul provoked doubters who said her remarkable bust cannot possibly be God-given, and Lee Ji-hye went to the length of giving an interview dressed in nothing but a swimsuit in a bid to ¡°prove¡± her breasts are all real. As a measure of the interest in breast enlargement, prurient or otherwise, phrases to do with breast surgery are among of the most-searched words at major portals. But how to know for sure if a woman¡¯s breasts are the real thing?
Breast enlargements now focus mostly on the trend toward a voluminous body silhouette, and women prefer a deeper cleavage. Plastic surgery clinic BARAM in Gangnam, Seoul says the size of breast implants has doubled from 135 cc on average in 1994 to 265 cc in 2003. With implants of 200-250 cc, breasts become so full that an average male adult¡¯s hands cannot cup them fully. But the procedure has come a long way since the improbable balloons of yesteryear, and surgeons now attempt to make them look as natural as possible. ¡°If your new breasts look too elastic, the augmentation wasn¡¯t successful,¡± says clinic chief Sim Hyung-bo. ¡°One way to tell augmented breasts with the naked eye is that it is safe to say that skinny women with very large breasts probably had them enlarged. It is true that Koreans¡¯ physique has changed remarkably over the years, but their breasts are still smaller than those of Westerners.¡± Augmented breasts are also less flexible and will bounce less during exercise such as walking or running.
Alas, women with firm, perfectly symmetrical breasts will find it hard to convince the cynics -- especially when lying down, because the enhanced bust will stay in shape and refuse to flatten like the genuine article. If women were overly ambitious in their augmentation, they may be afraid of letting their boyfriends touch their breasts. No matter how professional their plastic surgeon is, small breasts do not offer enough tissue to cover implants, so they can feel the texture of the silicone sacs.
Another telltale sign are the surgical scars, though today they are very small. In most cases, incisions were made in the armpits or around the areolas, but these days they are made inside the navel, so women who had the procedure do not have to worry about the scar when they wear a bikini. Even so, the method leaves scars when incisions are too big or not treated well. X-rays of augmented breasts make implants and surrounding tissue look hazy, while ultrasound shows the natural fatty tissue spotted while implants look inky. The U.S. supermodel Tyra Lynne Banks had her breasts examined by ultrasound on her ¡°Tyra Banks Show¡± to prove her breast were real.
