The Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union has declared all-out war on the Chosun Ilbo in retaliation for a series of recent reports critical of the hugely powerful union¡¯s pro-North Korean ideological tendencies and violent struggles. It was especially miffed by an article titled ¡°Teachers¡¯ Union Directed by a Handful of Ideologues¡± published on Aug. 2. On Monday, it declared war on this newspaper at its headquarters in Seoul and vowed to enlist ¡°all conscientious and progressive forces in the nation.¡±

In response to recent criticism, the union said conservatives were ¡°assaulting¡± the union to consolidate their unity and drum up support because they feel ¡°a sense of political crisis¡± after seeing two progressive presidents elected in a row. It denounced criticism from this paper as ¡°a physical white-hot terror attack,¡± ¡°an obvious criminal act¡± and ¡°a frenzied assault.¡±

The union vowed to file civil and criminal suits against the Chosun Ilbo, focusing on it alone. However, that suggests the union by focusing on the Chosun is also shooting a salvo across the bow of other news organizations.
