The U.S. State Department has imposed sanctions on seven firms including two from North Korea for allegedly providing Iran with material and equipment that could be used to develop weapons of mass destruction or missiles systems. The move hardens suspicions that North Korea and Iran secretly cooperated to develop WMD.
The sanctions bar U.S. government agencies from buying goods or services from the blacklisted companies and also prohibit the sale of some military equipment, services and technologies to them or their subsidiaries.
The two North Korean firms are Korean Mining and Industrial Development Corporation (KOMID) and Korea Pugang Trading Corporation, which have already been branded WMD proliferators by the U.S. Treasury and had their U.S. assets frozen.
Washington has reportedly tracked transfers of missile-related materials and equipment by ship and air between Pyongyang and Teheran for several years. Along with the two North Korean companies, Washington also slapped sanctions against two businesses from India, two from Russia and one from Cuba.
