U.S. 'Ready to Isolate N.Korea'

U.S. Seeking to Up Financial Sanctions on N.Korea

The U.S. is ready to isolate North Korea internationally over its nuclear weapons program, its top nuclear negotiator said on Sunday. The North Koreans "seem to like to isolate themselves,¡± U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, who is visiting Philippines, said. "If they want to get isolated, we are happy to isolate them." The remarks were made during Hill¡¯s visit to a military academy in the northern resort city of Baguio. Hill, however, added he was optimistic the North could be persuaded to return to the six-party talks on its nuclear program.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice indicated Washington is willing to have talks with North Korea within the six-nation framework at the ASEAN Regional Forum, which ended last Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. But the North is adamant that it will stay away from the talks until the U.S. lifts financial sanctions against it.
