Annual joint exercises between Korean and U.S. forces dubbed the Ulchi Focus Lens will take place from Aug. 21 to Sept. 1 this year, Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command said Friday. The drill is a command post exercise or CPX that makes use of computer simulation of battlefield conditions. The first exercise was held in 1975; this year is no. 32.

Some 8,000 U.S. troops will participate in this year's exercise, 5,000 from the U.S. Forces Korea and others from the U.S. mainland and other bases off the peninsula. North Korea has been demanding an end to all joint exercises. The CFC informed the North of the schedule for this year's exercise by way of the UN Command Military Armistice Commission.
