Typhoon Ewiniar, the country's third of the season, reached southwestern waters 160 §° off Seogwipo on the southern resort island at 3:30 a.m. on Monday, moving at 30 kmh in a northwesterly direction, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. It is expected to pass through northwestern waters 100 §° off Seogwipo at 9 a.m. and across the western island of Baengnyeongdo to reach Hwanghae Province, North Korea around midnight. Ewiniar means "Storm God" in the Chuuk language of Micronesia.

The Korea Meteorological Administration upped the typhoon alert in southwestern parts of the country -- Gwangju, South Jeolla Province and nearby islands like Hongdo. Jeju and South Jeolla and South Gyeongsang provinces are expected to see heavy rain of between 100 to 200 mm on Monday, with over 300 §® precipitation in some parts of the island. About 60-120 §® of rain will fall in North Gyeongsang and South Chungcheong provinces, and 20-80 §® in Seoul and nearby Gyeonggi, North Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces.
