A man in his 40s has been nabbed for passing himself off as a pilot to defraud women, in an echo of the Steven Spielberg-Leonardo di Caprio film "Catch Me if You Can." Tongyeong police in South Gyeongsang Province arrested a 42-year old identified as Kim on charges that he defrauded his victims of some W27 million (US$1=W949).
Police said Kim pretended to be a pilot and strolled around wearing a pilot¡¯s hat and uniform. His victims included a woman identified as Shim (41), whom he persuaded to hand over W500,000 by telling her he needed the money fast and would pay her back.
Kim came contact with Shim by ringing her in January and telling her he was a pilot and found a note on his desk asking him to call her. His deception was perfected into a fine art and included playing Shim English-language flight announcements over the phone after telling her to hold on for a moment. However, Shim eventually confirmed through one of her relatives that Kim did not in fact work for an airline.
