Both of the remaining contenders for the nation's airborne early warning system, the so-called E-X Project, from Boeing of the U.S. and IAI Elta of Israel have passed assessment procedures and been verified "fit for battle," the government said Wednesday. With the period to secure export permission from the U.S. and price negotiations taken into account, a final decision looks likely at the earliest toward the end of July, and at the latest in October.

The committee on defense industry advancement headed by Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung in a meeting Wednesday conditionally approved test results that concluded both of the aircraft were qualified for combat use. The committee is asking the two firms to submit the U.S. export licenses for core equipment that falls under a restriction.
