Tension Restrained Over Korea¡¯s Dokdo Survey Plan
Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday Korea has ¡°every right¡± to conduct a maritime survey in its own waters. The minister was responding to a question from a Japanese reporter over Tokyo¡¯s threat earlier in the week to stop Korea surveying waters near Dokdo, to which Japan believes it has a residual territorial claim.

The Japanese threat came at fruitless two-day talks on the demarcation of the two nations¡¯ exclusive economic zones in the East Sea that ended Tuesday. Tokyo warned it could send patrol ships to the area if Korea goes ahead and surveys it, boding ill for bilateral relations already strained to breaking point.
