The man who attacked Grand National Party chairwoman Park Geun-hye with a box cutter last Saturday probably acted alone, investigators say. A joint team of prosecutors and police says investigations suggest Ji Chung-ho (50) acted alone, despite suspicions over the vast credit card and phone bills the ex-convict ran up and paid off despite having no income to speak of.
The team said Ji earned W5 million(US$5,000) by agreeing to become the manager in name only of a bar in Gyeonggi Province, which would explain how he could afford to pay for the W7.64 million(US $7,640) he ran up on his credit card in the last six months. He also apparently withdrew cash on his credit card to pay for his bills.
The investigation shows that Ji¡¯s high-end mobile phone was bought on a 12-month installation plan last October, while two other cell phones registered in his name were actually acquired by two people he met at a halfway house in Incheon.
Ji¡¯s bank accounts show that he received welfare benefits of less than W100,000 on several occasions but there was no evidence that someone bankrolled him, the team said.
The team has not yet published its definite conclusions as local elections loom. The GNP has nonetheless already declared itself dissatisfied with the findings and says it will mobilize all means at its disposal including pushing for a special prosecutor to find the truth.
