A 450-year-old mummy has been discovered in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, offering a clearer picture of how people dressed and were buried during the height of the Chosun Dynasty. The mummy, which measures about 165 centimeters, is in near-pristine condition.
Experts handling the examination say the mummy was a nobleman who lived during the late 1500s, just before the Japanese invasion of Korea. He was the father of a high-ranking military officer who fought in the battles to drive out the Japanese invaders. Optimum levels of temperature and humidity drastically slowed decay, as did the wooden coffin covered in lime.
