A Buddhist nun has uncovered an extremely rare 100-year-or-greater sansam or wild ginseng on Mt. Ilwol in North Gyeongsang Province. The Korea Sansam Appraisal Association of Hoengseong, Gangwon Province said Thursday the nun has asked the association to handle the auction of the plant.
The wild ginseng unearthed by the nun identified as Nam consists of eights roots of the mother plant between 100 and 150 years old and weighing 38 g, and smaller offshoots. After starting evening worship at a small temple, the nun says she received a divine message to "go and save those who are dying." When she went to the mountain the next day, she found the eight-rooted wild ginseng at an altitude of 900 m above sea level. "Of the eight roots, two make a dongjasamˇ± -- a ginseng that looks like a child -- ˇ°that could be said to have fallen from heaven it's so rare," the association said. "She commissioned us, instructing us to find a buyer that could offer the right price to save those in need from dying." The ginseng will go under the hammer on June 3.
