High-speed Internet users whose personal information became public in a massive ID leak since March are filing a class action suit against service providers. On the most recent occasion on May 2, some 8.37 million high-speed Internet subscribers saw their personal information sold by staff at the service providers. Assuming that some victims were counted twice, their number is still estimated as at least 8 million or some 70 percent of the total number of 12.4 million subscribers.

Police say the names, identification numbers, telephone numbers and addresses of subscribers to four Internet providers -- KT, Hanaro Telecom, Thrunet, and Onse Telecom -- were illegally leaked due to poor management by the providers. Former and current staff of the companies sold subscribers¡¯ personal information for W1 (US$0.001) a head to marketing firms that use them to make spam calls or send spam mails.

Law firm KR said Wednesday it will sue the service providers on behalf of the victims for W500,000 (US$500) each in damages, in cooperation with the online legal site Lawmarket. Those who want to join the suit can visit the website (www.lawmarket.co.kr) and agree to be represented by the firm. The law firm says it will proceed once it has confirmed if applicants were among the victims.
