Microsoft CEO in Whistlestop Visit to Seoul
Microsoft Game Studios general manager Shane Kim on Wednesday praised the ¡°plentiful creativity¡± in Korea¡¯s digital entertainment industry. ¡°It¡¯s the same as in music and movies,¡± Kim told reporters in Seoul. Kim, who oversees the gaming business of the world¡¯s largest software developer, added his company must cooperate with Korean game companies to succeed in the Asian market.

An ethnic Korean, Kim (43) was born in the U.S. and is the top Korean-American executive at Microsoft. He is in Korea for the first time in a decade to attend the Seoul Digital Forum, which opens on Thursday. He joined the U.S. firm in 1990 and took his current position at the head of some 1,100 staff including game designers and artists in May 2004. Kim has had a key role in the development and distribution of the company¡¯s Xbox game console, which Microsoft sees as one of the driving forces for growth.

Kim singled out Korean game companies Phantagram, Webzen and Softmax as potential leaders on the global stage. He will reportedly discuss developing games for Xbox 360 with 15 Korean game developers during his three-day stay here.

Kim promised to strengthen support for Korean game developers and added the reason why he is interested in them is not because he himself is an ethnic Korean but because he believes that Korea is able to produce excellent interactive games appealing to global costumers.
