Ahn Jung-hwan caused something of a stir when he turned up at the National Football Center in Paju on Sunday in army camouflage pants, and a T-shirt with a large skull print. But he was merely chasing a trend that has taken Hollywood and Japan by storm.
The look is also sported by singer BoA in her new video. Other stars always ready to jump on the fashion bandwagon like Gang Dong-won, Ju Ji-hun and singer Bada have also been spotted in skull-print caps and T-shirts. Internet shopping mall G-Market says skull-print T-shirts are selling between 2,000-3,000 units a day.
The resurrection of the skull-and-crossbones style found on pirate flags and poison bottles began with haute couture from designers Alexander McQueen and Ed Hardy featuring skeletal images. The famous-for-being-famous such as Lindsey Lohan, Sienna Miller, Nikki Hilton and Kate Moss soon paraded skull-and-bones-print silk scarves wrapped around their head or waist and many sported bags with similar prints. Jeans and earrings were next, and there is even a skull iPod case. Japan¡¯s fashion brand Roen also embraced the fad.
At last month's Seoul Collection, a scarf with a white dot pattern suggesting a skull as was a full outfit by men's brand Bon. "The skull was an image of horror but has now been turned into a cute playful image," the company¡¯s head of design In Sang-hyeok said. "In Korea, trends from the U.S. and Japan have been fused to create a slightly more masculine take on the fad."
