Celeron laptops with Intel¡¯s affordable CPU can be bought for around W1 million (US $10,000) online, but they are smart enough for users to surf the Internet, produce documents and most of the things any ordinary user will ever want to do. The Celeron M brand is different from the Pentium CPUs in that it has relatively small cache memory -- the temporary storage place between CPU and RAM. As the CPU is far faster than RAM, it cannot work to its full capacity while the memory is doing its computing work.

But the Celeron M CPU for newer laptops has 1 MB of cache memory capacity, four times larger than its counterpart for desktop PCs. By contrast, the Pentium M CPU for laptops has 2 MB of cache memory. The Celeron M CPU works at 1.2-1.7 GHz, not much slower than the Pentium M CPU.

The Celeron M CPU¡¯s increasing popularity is proved by the fact that Samsung Electronics adopted it for the ¡°ultra-mobile¡± PC it recently released with great ambitions. Celeron laptops are W200,000-300,000 cheaper than those with the Pentium M CPU. There are some 120 kinds of Celeron laptops on the market, most of them priced between W800,000 and W1 million. The most affordable one, produced in China, can be bought for W590,000.

LG Electronics¡¯ Celeron laptop X-Note LE50 is good enough to replace a desktop PC, with a 15-inch liquid crystal display panel, an optical disk drive that can play even DVDs, and a 60 GB hard disk. It is priced at W995,000. Toshiba¡¯s Celeron notebook Satellite M50 and Hewlett-Packard Korea¡¯s Pavillion 1364 AP sell at W922,000 and W853,000 respectively. However, potential buyers need to keep in mind that Celeron laptops usually have panels larger than 14 inches and weigh more than 2.5 kg, making them rather cumbersome to lug around on a daily basis.
