China is one of the few allies of North Korea. The two countries have maintained close economic ties, and are now set to strengthen them further, agreeing to build hydro-electric power plants along their borders.
Later this year, North Korea and China will begin building two hydroelectric power plants along the Yalu or Apnok River that runs across their borders. China's Xinhua news agency reports that representatives from the two countries signed an agreement on Sunday in China's Jilin Province. The plants will be built between North Korea's border town of Manpo, and China's Jian City just across the border.
Once completed, the two dams will generate 42,000 kilowatts of energy for cities along the border. Both sides are reportedly set to push ahead with the construction even though the area is where over 2,000 ancient tombs from the Koguryo Kingdom have been discovered.
The border area between the two countries has been a hot potato among historians, with China claiming the excavated artifacts belonging to it. It remains unclear what type of agreement if any North Korea and China reached regarding the fate of the ancient tombs.
